American Statistical Association Names Dr. Katherine Monti Fellow For 2007
Chapel Hill, N.C. – Rho, Inc., a contract research organization that provides a full range of clinical development services to the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and medical device industries, is pleased to announce that Dr. Katherine Monti, Director of Rho’s Massachusetts office and Senior Statistical Scientist, has been named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA). The Fellows were presented on July 31 at the 167th annual Joint Statistical Meetings in Salt Lake City.
The ASA is the world’s largest association of statisticians and election to Fellow is its greatest honor. The ASA Fellow program has been active for more than 90 years. The number of Fellows is limited to no more than one third of one percent of the ASA membership. This year, 59 members were honored as Fellows of the Association. Candidates are nominated by fellow members and are chosen based on their reputation in and contributions to the statistical community.
Dr. Monti's service to the ASA has spanned over 30 years. Her involvement began in 1974 and progressed into leadership roles in the ASA’s Boston Chapter during the past 15 years. In 2005, Dr. Monti was elected to the ASA Board of Directors and the Council of Chapters Governing Board for a three-year term beginning in 2006. She held offices in the ASA’s Biopharmaceutical Section, which is the special interest group for pharma industry statisticians, for 5 years prior to her 2005 appointments. She also was a member and chair of the ASA’s Advisory Committee on Continuing Education.
Dr. Monti has been actively encouraging young statisticians to get involved with their professional organizations, noting that “statisticians who are interested in participating can easily do so. Volunteering serves the profession, provides the individual with a larger network of contacts, and can often be personally rewarding.
Katherine Monti is a respected expert in statistics with a wealth of experience in the field. She specializes in statistics tailored to the biopharmaceutical industry, for which she has worked for over a decade. Her current position is Director of Rho’s Massachusetts office, where she oversees an experienced team of statistical programmers and biostatisticians in Newton, a suburb of Boston.
Dr. Monti is a truly exceptional statistician, as evidenced by this most recent honor, said Dr. Ronald W. Helms, Chief Scientific Officer of Rho, Inc. “The election to Fellow of the ASA demonstrates her commitment to the organization and to the field of biostatistics.
The American Statistical Association, a scientific and educational society founded in Boston in 1839, is the second oldest continuously operating professional society in the United States. For more than 160 years, the ASA has been providing its 18,000 members serving in academia, government, and industry and the public with up-to-date, useful information about statistics. The ASA has a proud tradition of service to statisticians, quantitative scientists, and users of statistics across a wealth of academic areas and applications.

Dr. Herman Mitchell Selected Moderator For The Merck Childhood Asthma Network's Invitational Conference
CHAPEL HILL, NC – Rho, Inc., a specialty contract research organization that provides clinical development services for both the Federal government and the pharmaceutical industry, is pleased to announce that Herman E. Mitchell, PhD, has been selected moderator for The State of Childhood Asthma & Future Directions: Strategies for Implementing Best Practices, an invitational conference hosted by the Merck Childhood Asthma Network.
Childhood asthma is the leading chronic disease among children in the United States. The prevalence of asthma in children reached historically high levels during the mid 1990s and currently remains at these high levels. With the cause of the disease still unknown, researchers have launched large-scale research projects to better understand this public health problem.
Dr. Mitchell has been a leading researcher in the asthma community for the past 15 years. Starting in 1990, Dr. Mitchell has served as the Coordinating Center Principal Investigator for three consecutive studies of asthma among children in the inner city: the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases National Cooperative Inner-City Asthma Study; the NIAID, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and EPA jointly sponsored Inner-City Asthma Study; and the NIAID Inner-City Asthma Consortium. Serving as the Coordinating Center PI for each of these National Institutes of Health's NIAID endeavors to understand and ameliorate asthma among inner-city children, Dr. Mitchell has gained invaluable experience working with this sometimes hard-to-reach, vulnerable population. The Merck Childhood Asthma Network hosted The State of Childhood Asthma & Future Directions: Strategies for Implementing Best Practices conference to gather experts and thought leaders in asthma research to discuss and identify best practices in asthma treatment and management. The conference took place in Washington, D.C., December 13–14, 2006.
Herman E. Mitchell, PhD, has been a Senior Research Scientist at Rho since 1997. He has approximately 25 years of NIH multi-center coordinating experience and for the past 15 years has been involved in clinical research related to asthma in inner-city children. In the 1980s he was cofounder and Deputy Director of the Epidemiology Data Center at Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. He also served as Assistant to the Secretary of Health for the State of Pennsylvania and Director of the State Health Data Center in charge of the Statistics and Vital Records Divisions and of all Health Department Information Systems. Following this position he became Director of Research Systems and Vice President for Research Development at New England Research Institute in Boston . Dr. Mitchell has served as PI or Co-PI for more than a dozen NIH-sponsored clinical trials and epidemiologic studies. In addition to his extensive research in asthma, Dr. Mitchell has worked with the National Cancer Institute to establish Coordinating Centers in Belarus and Ukraine for studies of the Chernobyl project and has served as Co-PI for Coordinating Centers for HIV-AIDS (NIAID) and Obesity (NHLBI).
