Identifying unanswered questions about serious infections

The Bacteriology and Mycology Study Group (BAMSG) is a national clinical research group sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The group is composed of leading clinical scientists who help establish research priorities based on public health needs and scientific opportunities and advances. The Bacteriology and Mycology Biostatistical Operations Unit (BAMBU), located at Rho, helps strengthen BAMSG in a variety of ways:

• Statistical and clinical data management services
• Operational and administrative assistance
• Regulatory support
• Clinical site monitoring

As a nationwide network of research centers, BAMSG conducts clinical trials regarding bacterial and fungal infections. The study group focuses on four high-risk populations:

• Cancer or organ transplantation patients who are immunocompromised as a result of receiving chemotherapy or immunosuppression
• Patients who are not immunocompromised but are at risk for serious fungal infections, including very low birth weight babies and hospitalized adults
• HIV-infected patients at risk of fungal infections
• Hospitalized patients, especially those in intensive care units who are at risk for resistant bacterial infections
